Description:

4 hour hands-on workshop on Digital Methods And Qualitative Research. As digital technologies democratise the production, distribution and consumption of images, the social sciences and the arts are arguably closer than ever in terms of both purpose and methodology. This session explores the possibilities of visual methodologies for qualitative researchers by exploring overlapping interests and methods in contemporary artistic production and the social sciences.

The first session unpacks current debates around the role of visual methods in both the arts and social research to discuss whether a new ‘aesthetics of inquiry’ is emerging at the boundaries of artistic production and social research. Looking at work from a range of artists and researchers who work with images in a variety of media to understand, engage with and ultimately change the social world, we will discuss issues of representation, ownership, ethics and aesthetics at the core of their visual method. What is the benefit of reimagining social science research through artistic methodologies -and vice-versa-? (Workshop for current PhD Students Only)
