Description:

The internet is increasingly used to collect behavioural data (e.g., pleasantness ratings for stimuli, grammaticality judgments, etc.) from large samples of human subjects. This method, called crowd-sourcing, allows large amounts of data to be rapidly collected from remote locations.  This workshop will introduce the basic methodology of crowd-sourcing, including discussion of: (1) major crowd-sourcing platforms (e.g., Mechanical Turk, CrowdFlower); (2) research on the comparative quality of crowd-sourcing data; and (3) how to screen crowd-sourcing data to insure maximal data quality.

Students will open an on-line crowd-sourcing account and then set up their own survey study to collect data.  Students will also be trained how to screen crowd-sourcing data using EXCEL.

Students will learn the basics of how to conduct crowd-sourcing research, including the pros and cons of popular internet crowd-sourcing platforms, how to implement a program of survey or experimental research using crowd-sourcing, and how to screen crowd-sourcing data in EXCEL (for quality control) prior to their analysis.

Prerequisites: Masters and Ph.D. students in psychology and related fields (e.g., statistics, computer science, linguistics, neuroscience); some basic working knowledge of Mircrosoft EXCEL.
