Description:

QDA Miner and Wordstat are part of the suite of bespoke mixed methods analytic tools. QDA Miner is a qualitative and mixed methods tool, providing powerful coding, annotating, retrieving and analyzing functions. WordStat is a text analysis tool providing sophisticated quantitative content analysis and text mining tools. Used together they provide sophisticated and flexible means to integrate qualitative and quantitative data and analyses, in ways unique in comparison to other options currently available. There is now a Lite version of QDA Miner, providing free access to the basic features of QDA Miner.

For more information on the software see the developer website : http://www.provalisresearch.com/

This one day workshop provides a general overview to the core functionality of QDA Miner with an introduction to the ways in which the use of WordStat can contribute to mixed methods analyses of textual data. It is suitable for those wanting to explore the possibilities of software which offers sophisticated content analysis and text mining functionality alongside a suite of qualitative analysis tools.

See below for workshop outline.

Pre-requisites: No prior experience of the software is required, although participants will benefit from having explored the Provalis Research website before attending this workshop.

Outcomes: at the end of the workshop participants will have a general overview of the principles of QDA Miner and WordStat and analytic potentialities for their use. They will be confident in the early tasks of setting up projects and preparing data for use with the software, and in the initial analytic tasks of qualitative coding, note taking and basic content-based explorations. They will have a sense of longer-term direction and potentials offered by the more in-depth use of tools, including data interrogation and visualisation.

Documentation: this workshop is accompanied by step-by-step handouts for the tasks covered during the day, along with sources for additional support and lists of online resources.

Workshop outline:

Using sample data, the day will combine discussion, demonstration and hands-on practice. Topics covered include the following:
? Terminology, navigating the interface and functional dialogue boxes
? Setting up & managing projects
? Cases, Variables & Documents
? Backing up, exporting, making changes

? Working qualitatively with texts (QDA Miner - full and lite versions)
? Exploring the content of texts quantitatively (introduction to some of the functions provided by WordStat)
