Description:

This course examines the opportunities and challenges of returning to a study conducted at some point in the past to undertake a re-study. It will consider the definition of a re-study, the rationales for undertaking re-studies, the selection of cases for re-study and decisions about the timing of re-studies, the position of the researcher or researchers conducting the re-study, and the issue of making allowance for the context in which the original study was undertaken. Lessons relating to working with archived data, to the use of methodological innovations, and to theoretical developments will also be considered. The course will conclude with reflections on what re-studies can tell us about the cumulative character of social science.

The course covers:

  • What re-studies are and why they are conducted
  • The practical challenges of conducting a re-study
  • Discussion of debates about the strengths and weaknesses of re-studies

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Have gained an understanding of the rationale for conducting a re-study
  • Have gained an appreciation of the opportunities and challenges that conducting a re-study generates
  • Have been encouraged to consider how re-studies may figure in their own work and/or how their own work may be framed to be re-studied in the future

2. £60 – For staff at UK academic institutions, ESRC funded researchers and registered charity organisations
