Big Data and Confidentiality: Does the rise of big data mean the downfall in privacy?

There is a lot of interest around big data, and at the same time there is fear about how it is used.

In this interactive roundtable event experts from a variety of disciplines will consider the confidentiality issues related to 'big data' and the existence and use of such large datasets.

The phenomenon of 'big data' has become increasingly relevant as computers' capability of collecting and generating large datasets with very detailed information about individuals has improved. Big data can help private companies to improve their operations and give government the information and evidence which can improve decision-making processes but at the same time very little has been done to reassure the general public about how confidential information is safeguarded.

Join Richard Welpton, Secure Data Access Manager at the UK Data Archive, Professor Vania Sena, Director of the Business and Local Government Data Research Centre and a representative from Essex School of Law as they discuss the issues around how personal and confidential data can be sensibly managed.

The event is organised by the ESRC Business and Local Government Data Research Centre, University of Essex as part of the 12th annual ESRC Festival of Social Science that takes place from 1-8 November 2014 with over 200 free events nationwide.
