Description:

Topics:

This talk will introduce some of the main quality considerations involved in mixed methods research. It will begin by asking questions about why quality criteria are an issue for social researchers generally and then examine some of the ways in which quality criteria are couched in the context of both quantitative and qualitative research. The session will explore the different contexts of mixed methods research and their implications for quality issues. It then examines different approaches to bespoke criteria for mixed methods research using several examples to illustrate the general points made. Some general themes are extracted from these writings and are employed as a structure for the rest of the talk. At the end, some general lessons and implications will be drawn.

Learning objectives:

At a juncture when mixed methods research (i.e. research that combines quantitative research and qualitative research) is becoming increasingly common and accepted, it is appropriate to consider what we might be looking for in good quality mixed methods research. The quality criteria associated with good quality quantitative research and qualitative research are well known but mixed methods research raises the prospect that a wider set of quality considerations might be relevant to mixed methods research. The principal educational objective, therefore, is to introduce these considerations so that researchers contemplating doing mixed methods research are aware of some of the main expectations.
