Description:

Ethnography is being widely used for diverse problems, in creative ways that respond to social and technological developments. However, it is usually long-term and heavily involved, requiring considerable commitment from the researcher. This course will consider how ethnographic methods, especially participant observation and building longer-term relationships with respondents based on trust and rapport, can contribute to a study without the need for a full ethnography. The course will introduce participants to the principals and practicalities of ethnography and then introduce ways in which a ‘bit of ethnography’ can enhance qualitative interviewing. It is a practical course, designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to immerse themselves in a setting, to listen, to ask questions; and to supplement observation with the analysis of interview data, documents, and visual and digital data.   Topics covered

  • The foundations and principles of ethnography
  • Doing participant observation
  • Making fieldnotes
  • Ethnographic interviews and conversations
  • Building trust and rapport
  • Issues of representativeness, reliability and validity
