Description:

Protecting children from abuse and neglect raises fundamental challenges for policy and practice in social work and other disciplines such as health, education and law. What are the limits of family autonomy and tolerance for different lifestyles? When and how best to provide preventive and supportive services to help parents, and when is greater compulsion required? What does research tell us about the best ways of protecting children in their families, in kinship care, or in out-of-home care? How do different agencies and professionals work together, and how can this be improved?  Presented in collaboration with the Centre for Research on Children and Families (CRCF), this two-day workshop will cover all aspects of the research process for child protection, from formulating research questions to research methods, data collection, analysis and achieving impact. Drawing on a range of real-life examples of research carried out by the CRCF and other contributors, the workshop provides a forum for participants to hear about research methods, challenges and findings; consider analytical approaches using sample data; share their own ideas and experiences; and debate ethical and practical issues of conducting research in a field that is so sensitive and complex, socially, professionally and politically.
