Description:

Many qualitative methodologies articulate the need to support research relationships which embody (more) equal participation. Approaches may "allow" or "enable" research participants' voices, inform and represent their lives and recognise or attempt co-construction in research processes and products. Different participants may bring very different expectations about who controls research topics, development, processes and findings.  However, the wider society, interest groups, voluntary organisations and research funders increasingly expect participation to be demonstrated in the production of knowledge.  In what ways and how far do qualitative methodologies exemplify and promote participation?  In what ways can qualitative approaches build knowledge about participation? This qualitative methods symposium will showcase and critically examine exemplars of participation in qualitative research projects undertaken at UEA and by other qualitative research groups in the East of England. The programme will mix parallel plenaries and workshops allowing time for networking and sharing of ideas.
