Description:

Discriminant validity is a crucial concept in latent variable modelling. As such, it is relevant to researchers from across the spectrum of quantitative social science, but especially those conducting structural equation, multi-level, and longitudinal modelling involving latent variables. The concept argues that before examining relationships between constructs, it is vital to ensure that constructs can be adequately distinguished from one another. Otherwise, significant relationships can be reported between constructs that in reality are not distinct from each other. Best practice adopts the use of multiple tests of discriminant validity. In particular, the use of confidence intervals could prove helpful, as it has been in the assessment of coefficient alpha. This course will introduce discriminant validity assessment through a mix of lectures and discussion of research papers.
