Course Leader(s): Debra Gray (University of Winchester) and Irmgard Tischner (UWE)

Aims

This workshop aims to provide participants with practical skills in producing their own high quality qualitative research and in critiquing and evaluating qualitative research more broadly. The workshop will emphasise the active role of the research in qualitative research and the importance of a reflexive approach. We will discuss the practical need to evaluate qualitative research (Should this doctorate be awarded? Should this paper be published?) and highlight reflexivity as a central feature of quality control in qualitative research. Participants will be supported in developing the skills necessary to be reflective and reflexive qualitative researchers and we will explore good and bad practices in reflexivity. Quality techniques and strategies specific to qualitative research will be examined and participants will be guided in developing practical skills in critically evaluating qualitative research.

The Participants

The workshop will be equally appropriate to individuals undertaking postgraduate study and experienced researchers new to qualitative research. This workshop is also suitable for people working in a range of (private, public and third sector) settings seeking to develop their qualitative research skills. The programme is aimed at participants with little or no knowledge or experience of qualitative research.

The Course Leaders

Debra Gray and Irmgard Tischner are skilled and practised qualitative researchers, with much experience of evaluating qualitative research (as teachers, supervisors, examiners and peer reviewers), and supporting students at all levels to conduct rigorous and sophisticated qualitative projects.

Workshop Structure and Content

The workshop will incorporate the Qualitative Research International Summer School closing keynote address by Professor Lucy Yardley.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The workshop will include some lecture content, but most of the day is focused on group discussions and small group with, with lots of opportunities to seek the advice of the course leaders.
