Aims
This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of discourse analysis, and specifically discursive psychology, as an analytic methodology for qualitative research. The workshop will cover both theoretical and practical issues, and will guide participants through the process of doing a discursive analysis, to enable participants to get to grips with, and feel confident in, discursively analysing qualitative data. This workshop starts with a discussion of the theoretical foundations of discourse analysis, particularly discursive psychology, and how discourse analysis relates to other forms of qualitative analysis (e.g. IPA, TA or Grounded Theory), as well as when and why it is appropriate to use a discourse analysis. This will be followed by a series of interactive sessions, in which we focus on how to approach and analyse data from a discursive psychology perspective. Finally, we will end the day with a discussion of how this kind of analysis could be useful to, or taken forward to, participants’ own research contexts. This workshop will provide a solid foundation for further learning and/or advanced training in discourse analysis and discursive psychology.
The Participants
The workshop will be useful for individuals working in a variety of research contexts who wish to develop skills in discursively analysing qualitative data. The workshop will be equally appropriate to individuals undertaking postgraduate study and experienced researchers new to discourse analysis. The workshop is aimed at participants with little or no knowledge or experience of discourse analysis.
The Course Leader
Sally Wiggins is director of POLLEN (Psychology of Learning Lecturers’ Network), co-editor of Critical Bodies (Palgrave) and Discursive Research in Practice (Cambridge University Press), and author of many papers on discourse analysis and discursive psychology.
