Aims

This workshop aims to introduce participants to Grounded Theory as an analytic method for qualitative research and equip them with practical skills in analysing qualitative data using Grounded Theory. It will cover all the basics of Grounded Theory research in psychology and the social sciences, including when and why to use Grounded Theory, the different versions Grounded Theory that have developed since the US sociologists Glaser and Strauss first introduced the constant comparative method/Grounded Theory in the 1960s, and what constitutes a ‘grounded theory’. The workshop aims to ‘get beyond’ a textbook approach to teaching and learning about qualitative methods and will emphasise the ‘messy’ reality of qualitative research. Participants will be given hands on experience of using Grounded Theory methods: initial coding and categorisation of data; concurrent data collection and analysis; writing memos; theoretical sampling; constant comparison analysis; theoretical sensitivity; developing a core category; theoretical saturation and theoretical integration. Throughout the workshop we will emphasise the importance of a reflexive approach to Grounded Theory research; we will be following Kathy Charmaz’s constructivist model and so will be considering how the interaction between the researcher and the participant impacts on the data and the meanings that the researcher develops from the data.

The Participants

The workshop will be equally appropriate to individuals undertaking postgraduate study and experienced researchers new to Grounded Theory. The workshop will also be useful for individuals working in a variety of settings who wish to develop and improve their skills in qualitative data analysis. The programme is aimed at participants with little or no knowledge or experience of Grounded Theory.

The Course Leader

Andrea Halewood (UWE) is a counselling psychologist and an experienced supervisor of postgraduate qualitative – and particularly, Grounded Theory – research.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The workshop will include some short lecture content, but most of the day is focused on practical demonstrations and activities and small group work, with lots of opportunities to seek the advice of the facilitator.
