Description:

Course Leader(s): Debra Gray (University of Winchester)

Aims

This workshop aims to introduce participants to focus groups as a data collection tool for qualitative research and equip them with practical skills in designing and conducting focus groups. It will cover all the basics of focus group research in psychology and the social sciences, including when and why to use focus groups, what makes a good focus group and focus group moderator, and designing effective focus group schedules. We will explore the dynamics of focus groups and the role of the moderator within focus groups and how this differs from the role of the interviewer in qualitative interviews, as well as exploring more practical and technical issues such as asking appropriate questions, getting people to talk, group composition and managing difficult participants. The workshop aims to ‘get beyond’ a textbook approach to teaching and learning about focus groups and will emphasise the ‘messy’ reality of focus groups in qualitative research. Participants will be given opportunities to develop skills in focus group moderation and to reflect on their moderation ‘style’. Throughout the workshop we will emphasise the active role of the researcher in focus group research.

The Participants

The workshop will be equally appropriate to individuals undertaking postgraduate study and experienced researchers new to focus groups. The workshop will also be useful for individuals working in a variety of settings who wish to develop and improve their focus group techniques. The programme is aimed at participants with little or no knowledge or experience of focus groups.

The Course Leaders

Debra Gray is a knowledgeable and practised focus group moderator, having worked on a number of different projects involving focus group methods, and is greatly experienced in teaching and supervising focus group research, and supporting students in developing their skills in focus group moderation.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The workshop will include some short lecture content, but most of the day is focused on practical activities and small group work, with lots of opportunities to seek the advice of the facilitators.
