Description:

Course Leader(s): Victoria Clarke (University of the West of England), Virginia Braun (University of Auckland), Nikki Hayfield (UWE) and Gareth Terry (Open University)

Aims

This 2-day workshop will provide a thorough grounding in Thematic Analysis (TA) as a method for analysing qualitative data. Participants will be guided through Braun and Clarke’s (2006) approach to TA, using qualitative data drawn from research conducted within the Department of Health and Social Sciences at UWE and the Department of Psychology at The University of Auckland. The workshop starts with a discussion of ‘the many questions of thematic analysis’. We will then explore each phase in the analytic process starting with ‘familiarising ourselves with data’ and ‘generating initial codes’. We will consider different types of code (semantic and latent), and the assumptions and standpoints that we as researchers bring to the analytic process. Participants will be invited to engage in various individual and group coding tasks. We will then focus on how we develop our codes and initial themes into a coherent and convincing story about, or interpretation of, a data-set. We will attempt to pin down what interpretative analysis actually entails and the types of questions we should be asking ourselves in the latter phases of analysis. We will explore different approaches to, and varieties of, TA (such as essentialist vs. constructionist TA) and the relationship between TA and other analytic approaches. Finally, we will highlight and demonstrate good and bad practices in TA.

The Participants

The workshop will be equally appropriate to individuals undertaking postgraduate study and experienced researchers new to qualitative analysis. This workshop is also suitable for people working in a range of (private, public and third sector) settings seeking to develop skills in the analysis of qualitative data. The programme is aimed at participants with little or no knowledge or experience of TA in particular and qualitative analysis in general.

The Course Leaders

Victoria Clarke and Virginia Braun are authors of Successful Qualitative Research and, the most widely cited resource on TA, Using Thematic Analysis in Psychology. Nikki Hayfield and Gareth Terry have co-authored papers on TA with Victoria Clarke and Virginia Braun and are highly experienced in using, teaching and supervising TA.

Teaching and Learning Methods

There will be lecture content on each day of the workshop, but most of each of the two days will be focused on practical activities and small group work, with lots of opportunities to seek the advice of the facilitators.

Please note there will be two parallel groups of this workshop
