Description:

This is a two day workshop designed to be an introduction to longitudinal social survey data. It is an introductory level course. The course is designed for researchers whose interests are substantive rather than methodological but who wish to be introduced to longitudinal social survey datasets and appropriate data analysis techniques. This course assumes very little knowledge of statistics and includes no mathematics. The course is suitable for postgraduate students and early career researchers, but more experienced researchers are also welcome.

The workshop will focus on existing the large-scale household panel surveys, especially the British Household Panel Survey and Understanding Society (the UK Household Longitudinal Study). It will also introduce data from the British Birth Cohort Studies and other longitudinal data resources.

Participants will be introduced to the key concepts associated with the collection and analysis of longitudinal data. They will learn about the structure and content of longitudinal social surveys and the scope and limitations of existing datasets. They will be introduced to techniques such as modelling temporal information and examining trends over time. In particular they will be introduced to repeated cross-sectional analysis, cohort analysis, duration analysis and techniques for panel data.

This is an introductory level taught course and does not include any hands-on data analysis or direct use of statistical software. There will however be a series of practical demonstrations of longitudinal data techniques using Stata. Participants will be given access to a specially prepared Stata file to help them begin longitudinal data analysis.
