Description:

Meta-analysis - Mon 8-Tue 9 June 930 - 1500

Dr Rod Bond

Meta-analysis has become the standard method of reviewing literature in psychology, and is closely related to the concept of systematic review widely used in the health/medical literature. This workshop will cover the different stages of carrying out a meta-analysis: (1) defining the problem and locating relevant studies, (2) developing a coding scheme and coding study reports, (3) analysis and interpretation of results. We will review various measures of effect size, corrections for study artefacts and both fixed- and random-effects models. We shall also look at publication bias and how it might be detected and evaluated. Participants will carry out small scale analyses during the workshop using SPSS.

Level: This is an introduction to meta-analysis but as an advanced course it presupposes some previous experience of quantitative methods.
