Description:

This course was previously called Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Design

The use of Randomised Control Trials (RCTs) in social research. Knowledge of basic statistics required.

14 and 15 January 2015 and
4 and 5 February 2015

This course covers methods for identifying the causal impacts of social and economic programmes in both the government and non-government sectors and of appraising the costs and benefits of these programmes in the light of estimates obtained of their causal impacts.

The course covers the full range of experimental and quasi-experimental methods of impact evaluation: randomised control trials ('field experiments'), 'before and after' and 'difference in differences', matching methods (including propensity score matching), instrumental variables in regression modelling, and regression discontinuity design. It also covers power calculations and sample size. Methods of appraisal covered include cost benefit analysis and cost effectiveness analysis.
