What is this workshop about?
This one day event will provide an introduction to realist evaluation and realist synthesis, as developed by Professor Ray Pawson (Pawson &Tilley, 1997; Pawson, 2006). By the end of this event, we hope you will have an understanding of what realist evaluation and realist synthesis are, an overview of their strengths and weaknesses and have explored whether these approaches will answer your research questions.
Who is running the workshop?
This workshop has been designed in collaboration with Ray Pawson who will be presenting on the day and answering specific project issues in the ‘realist surgeries’. Dr Joanne Greenhalgh and Dr Ana Manzano will be co-hosting the event. They are currently working with Prof Pawson in consulting and applying these methods in research across a number of policy sectors.
This group now forms the Health Hub of the University of Leeds Building Sustainable Societies Transformation Fund project which aims to apply social science methods to address policy and clinically relevant challenges in healthcare through interdisciplinary research.
How will the workshop be run?
Presentations followed by question and answer sessions will provide an overview of each approach and examples of how realist evaluation and synthesis have been applied in practice. This will enable delegates to understand how to carry out a realist evaluation and a realist synthesis and critically evaluate each approach. Group based “surgeries” will provide an opportunity for delegates to explore specific issues relating to the application of realist evaluation and realist synthesis in their own research and share insights from their own research and experience. Opportunities for networking are integrated across the day but a “speed networking session” will facilitate this by allowing participants to discuss their interests and exchange emails.
Who is the workshop for?
The workshop is relevant to PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, early career researchers and academics who are interested in the application of realist methods to the evaluation and synthesis of complex interventions and for those with an interest in realism in the social sciences.
