Description:

n this intensive 5-day course we introduce multimodal methods for analysing digital data and environments, including video, online, Web 2.0, mobile and tangible technologies.

The methods will be illustrated with examples from a range of different research projects. The programme includes lecture presentations and discussions, demonstrations of data analysis and data exercises.  Analytical procedures include transcription and interactional analysis, ethnographic and semiotic analysis, and narrative analysis. The course will provide handouts and readings. It will be led by the MODE team: Jeff Bezemer, Andrew Burn, Myrrh Domingo, Carey Jewitt, Gunther Kress, Sara Price and Niall Winters.

Provisional programme

Day One: Introduction to the course; Selecting and recording digital data; Key issues for analysing digital data; and Ethics

Day Two: working with digital video; Transcription and interactional analysis

Day Three: Ethnographic and semiotic analysis of Moving image and film production

Day Four: Narrative and semiotic analysis of social media, blogs and websites

Day Five: Multimodal analysis of interaction with tangible and mobile technologies

Cost:

The course is open only to participants who are able to attend all five days of the programme. The total fee for the course is £250. This fee covers tuition and lunch.
