Description:

All history research projects include a literature review. Often, it is a piece of work that decides whether a student will continue in the degree. Having served many times as an internal and external examiner, I have noticed that many students have difficulty composing their literature reviews. By intervening at an early stage, students can avoid future difficulties. In addition, composing a strong literature review at the start of a project can help to frame the research and subsequent writing of the thesis.

This online course is designed to prepare PGR students in History and related disciplines to produce a literature review/historiographical essay. In most cases, a literature review will be the first piece of written work that will need to be submitted and often serves as the basis for confirmation in the degree course. The session will begin by surveying the basic format/organisational options for a literature review before moving onto such issues as how to summarise and analyse historical literature concisely. Students will also have the opportunity to workshop their own literature reviews.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, students will:

  1. Understand the disciplinary conventions related to writing a literature review or historiographic essay.
  2. Understand the basic organisational schemes used in historical literature reviews and be able to identify the scheme that is best suited to the student’s own research.
  3. Be able to compose a historiographical paragraph in accordance with the conventions of the discipline.

Pre-requisites and advance information

Students will be asked to read a sample historiographic essay (TBD) in advance of the session. A link will be sent via email.

Students will also be asked to bring drafts of their literature reviews and a bibliography to the session. For those students who have not yet begun to write their literature reviews, a bibliography is sufficient.
