NCRM 2005 Short Term Research Project
The Hub has commissioned three short-term research projects for the academic year 04/05. These projects comprise a series of events and related activities over a six month period. The focus of the call for this year was comparative research. The projects that have been funded are:
Cross-cultural and comparative research methods: the challenges of global social science
Professor J. Holmwood (University of Sussex)
This project focuses on three key themes relevant to the conduct of cross-cultural and comparative research: ethical concerns, multi-site ethnography, and small- and large-n comparative solutions. Following an introductory conference, the project will be based on three workshops/seminars.
Qualitative cross-national research networks
Professor J. Brannen (University of London)
This project will bring together two pre-existing networks of European researchers in order to explore a number of important issues relevant to the conduct of qualitative cross-national research. Three workshops will be held focusing on: comparative organisational case studies; comparative biographies; and, cross national analysis of video observations.
Developing mixed mode methods in comparative social surveys
Professor R. Jowell (City University)
This project will investigate the comparability of cross-national social surveys when the mode is different in different countries and consider the capacity in different countries to administer surveys with particular modes. A methodological review of mode effects in survey research will be conducted followed by a one day conference and a one-day workshop.
Two of the projects will commence in April 2005 and one in October 2005. The call for applications for the academic year 05/06 round of short term projects will be issued in June 2005.
